As it was custom, Mary and Joseph named their child Jesus on the eighth day after His birth. When a name was given it represented what that person should be in the future. The literal Hebrew translation of Jesus is “the Lord saves.” In the birth and naming of this child we see the wondrous design and plan of God in giving us a Savior who would bring us grace, mercy, and freedom from the power of sin.
