Weekly Devotion – August 15th

Jesus shocks the Apostles when He says, “I have come to set the earth on fire.” Fire is often used to represent God’s presence through the Holy Spirit—such as the burning bush in Exodus and the tongues of fire at Pentecost.

In this Gospel, we see a passionate side of Jesus. He asks to be the most important person in our lives. Leading a life guided by our faith is difficult. Some people may not agree with our decisions, and it can lead to divisions between friends and family members. We are reminded in the second reading that even Jesus faced opposition from those around Him, and to keep our eyes fixed on His example.

We pray together: St. Jude, make me strong in love and fidelity so that nothing may hinder me from doing God’s will.
